The ocean is beautiful and frightening. Just beyond the shallow, greenish-blue sapphire water lies a seemingly bottomless chasm filled with dangerous sea predators. But if you think too much about the dangers that lie just beyond the gorgeous coastal waters you risk missing the beauty right in front of you. You become too afraid to step in and experience the refreshing water.
Fear is crippling. It prohibits us from seeing the good things that surround us. It stops us from pursuing our dreams. It confines us to a negative and worrisome state of mind. It’s downright destructive.
Fear crippled me.
For the longest time, I suppressed the art that so desperately desired to spring up out of me. I played it safe. The fear of failure and embarrassment held me back from pursuing my life-long dream. But little by little, I allowed my muse to speak and shine. I dipped my toes in the cool water. Then my ankles. Before I knew it, I was chest deep!
Launching The Artful Composer has filled me with an overwhelming sense of fear and joy all at the same time. This journey has rewarded me in ways I would have never dreamed possible. I have more passion, zeal, and fervor for life, family, and work than ever before. Pushing through the thick walls of fear, complacency, and laziness is an ever rewarding experience.
Regardless of what “success” The Artful Composer may achieve, I now realize that meaningful work must emanate from a heart of sincere passion and service. Fear cannot be allowed any power.
So, what are the things that hold you back? What predators do you fear lurk just beyond the emerald shoreline?
Consider what Jon Acuff has to say about it,
Punch fear in the face.
Step into water. It’s well worth it!
